Bright red blood is coming while peeing after sexual intercourse

Similar Questions - Blood in Urine, Blood coming after sex, blood while peeing

Detailed Question:

I had sexual intercourse last week immediately after my periods. Next day after sex, I saw blood in my urine while peeing.

Now this has started happening a lot of times since then, and specially while having sex. During the day normally, there is no blood otherwise. The colour of blood is bright red and there is a lot of blood while having sex & while peeing.

I have a 10-year non hormonal IUD. I had a clean pap a 2 months back, I have recently tested negative for all Sexually transmitted Diseases and so has my spouse.

I don't feel pain or heavy cramps, but yes sometimes I feel mild period cramps. Small amount of blood is collected on tampon whenever I put it, but it's not as much as it would have been during my menstruation. But, when I have sex, there is much more bright red blood than during periods.

A few extra inputs :-

  • I think it's weird that it happened immediately after sex
  • The first time when blood started coming after sex, was actually my first time after 1 month.
  • As the pain is mild, could it be a cancer as well?
  • My diet is completely healthy
  • I work-out and lift heavy weights everyday

After researching on internet, I come to a conclusion that I might have Hemangioma or something similar. Can this much bleeding be caused by a loose IUD? Though, I checked by feeling the IUD and I think it is still secure.

Should I consult a gynaecologist or a urologist?

Hi,

Blood after sex can be caused due to several reasons. Let me try to list as many as possible reasons :-

  1. Because of IUD - As you are describing, bleeding after sex can indicate that IUD might have moved from top of your uterus to some lower part, which may not only cause bleeding while peeing but also make it ineffective.
  2. Infection - Such bleeding can also be caused due to an infection. It can either be a yeast infection or any sexually transmitted disease like Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea which might irritate the cervix to an extent that trauma from sex is leading to bleeding. [However, as you have stated in your query that you and your spouse both have been tested for STDs, and the result was -ve, it is much less likely to be the reason.]
  3. Projections of Tissues on Cervix - benign polyps of the cervix (small projections of tissue) that may also bleed from the friction caused by sexual intercourse. Sometimes, if your vagina is too dry, then a sexual intercourse can cause tears in vagina causing fresh bleeding.

Next Steps

So, first and foremost, it is very imp. to make sure that your IUD is in place, because if it is even slightly displaced, it can cause a lot of serious problems.

We advice you to Consult a Gynaecologist. The doctor will check the position of your IUD and make it correct if possible, or she might have to remove it & suggest you to use an alternate method of contraception.

Gynaecologist, in your case will also be able to check for any lesions in or around the cervix or your vagina that is causing bleeding while peeing after sex. (tear, polyp, erosion, infection etc.) If there are any polyps, they can be identified & removed. If there is a tear, it can be healed by the use of lubricants or modifications in style of sex.

In any case, you must not ignore bleeding after intercourse, especially if it happens repeatedly.

Because you've had a clear pap sometime back, It can be Hemangioma as well (it can't be cancer mostly), if not any of the other stated causes.

You must repeat pap test, if you've done it more than 2 months ago, else it is not necessary. It's not a very serious problem so no need to panic as such, but it is highly recommended to get this evaluated. I would suggest you to get doctor's advice immediately to diagnose and treat your condition of bleeding while peeing after sex.
