Question Topic - Amoxicillin for Chlamydia

Hey JustDoc,

My question is that can I use Amoxicillin to cure chlamydia. My doctor told me that if I take Amoxicillin 500mg dosage thrice a day anyone, it can cure my chlamydia as quick as in a week. Now my second question is that if I take Amoxicillin (875mg) dosage instead of 500 twice a day for a week, is it equally effective to cure chlamydia.
Kindly share your thoughts on below points:-
  • Will it be okay to follow advice of my doctor in using Amoxicillin 500mg?
  • Are there some other antibiotics available for the treatment of Chlamydia?
  • Can syphilis or herpes also happen because of this disease?
This will really help me. Look forward to answer.

Before moving on, I strongly suggest you to consult a dermatologist for a proper treatment & advice on medicines.

What is chlamydia infection?

Chlamydia is an STD infection which may not present symptoms, but the patients can still infect others through sexual contact. There are no common symptoms for Chlamydia but some people experience pain in lower abdomen, pelvis, vagina or testicle. Pain can also present during sexual activity or while urinating. There can be abnormal discharge from penis or vagina as well.

Treatment for chlamydia

It is advised that all the partners of patients should be duly tested for chlamydia and should be treated accordingly. It is an infection which requires right dosage of antibiotics to cure it.

Amoxicillin dosage for chlamydia (Pregnancy case)
Chlamydia is an infection that requires strict antibiotic control and there are a lot of antibiotics that can cure it. Amoxicillin is also one that is prescribed, but its use is limited to pregnant women. When given in for Chlamydia in pregnancy, Amoxicillin is prescribed at 500mg thrice daily for 7 days.

Doxyclycline can also be used in pregnancy but studies have show that drug like Amoxicillin is more effective in curing chlamydia when given in right dosage. The repeat testing is useful to detect if the disease still persists.

Medicines to cure chlamydia other than Amoxicillin

Other medicines like Doxyclycline are preferred in curing it most commonly among others. However, taking it in the right prescribed dose and regularly is important for the medicine to be most effective in your body. Any change in dosage will affect the efficacy of the medicine and hence the cure rate. 875mg twice a day for 7 days is the dosage for antibiotics after which you can test yourself for chlamydia 1 month post-medication.

Common alternatives to amoxicillin for chlamydia (with dosage)

Other STDs along with Chlamydia
Herpes or other STD's like HIV may co-exist with Chlamydia, but there has been no connection established and a test may be helpful to diagnose if any. Patients should undergo treatment of disease as any normal patient along with Chlamydia.
