Detailed Question:

Hi Doctor,

I have severe caugh and cold since past 7 days. I also have a runny nose, sore throat and weakness all over my body.

Can you please suggest me home remedies and medicines to get relief from this. I'm now really fed up with this and need a solution, I have even tried caugh syrup but it didn't help and still, the green phlegm is coming out of my body.

Thanks for your question, I'd assume that you mean a cough (and not a caugh).

Here are some precautions you need to take to control a cough and cold.
  • Avoid cold or chilled drinks/food
  • Take plenty of warm water, tea, milk etc.
  • Make sure you are eating regularly otherwise it might cause weakness
  • You can take steam thrice a day to get relief from cold and runny nose
  • Do saline gargles twice a day which can help you with a cough and sore throat
  • Do not exert physically and take adequate rest
Generally, cough and cold are symptoms of common cold or an infection. I'd suggest you do a personal consultation with more details because if it is an infection, we might have to treat it accordingly. If tests suggest a bacterial infection, we might have to administer antibiotics. But taking antibiotics just like that might not help with a cough at all.

If you have additional symptoms like fever and muscle pain you can consider taking a Sinarest Tablet as well. If a cough is caused by an allergy, Sinarest or other OTC medicines can provide relief. If things are still not better in next 2-3 days, please visit a doctor for in-person consultation.

Sometimes, a longer duration of a cough might indicate Pneumonia or sinusitis. 10-14 days for a cough is actually considered normal.

If a cough persists for more than 2 weeks, we need to get the following diagnostic tests done:-
  • Sputum Culture
  • Gram Stain
Here are some common causes of a chronic cough:-
  1. Post-Nasal Drip
  2. Infection
  3. Asthma
  4. GERD
  5. Allergy
  6. Bronchitis
  7. Cystic Fibrosis
