Detailed Question:

Hi doctor,
I regularly suffer from Severe headaches, severe sadness, all the time crying and very low self-esteem. I don't take interest in anything, not even in things that I used to love; always thinking bad, thinking 24*7. I don't feel like doing anything even if want to, don't feel like eating, can't sleep at night.I face breathing troubles and it is extremely difficult at times.
I have become very weak mind wise. If there is a fight at home or some one talks loudly situation worsens, I start thinking about past and future which makes the situation bad. I fear a lot of things. Each and everything makes me think. I want to die. I have even asked for a gun for dying.
My parents and sister create negativity around. My father used to discourage me in the past. Now also says something which hurts and sometimes makes fun. He too has got fed up of the whole thing. I have already been counselled by 8 people. I have become dependent on people. Please help.

I can only imagine the problem and pain you are dealing with. Sometimes mentally we become dependent on others to share our issues. But the right way to do this will be a counselings session with a Psychologist. They will help you get over these feelings and help you get back to normal in life. You should also consult a Psychiatrist for the insomnia you complain about so that adequate treatment can be started. This is curable but only you can help yourself. Take care and I hope you get well soon.

Insomnia

I
nsomnia can be caused by psychiatric and medical conditions, unhealthy sleep habits, specific substances, and/or certain biological factors. It's important to first understand what could be causing your sleep difficulties.

Examples of medical conditions that can cause insomnia are:

  • Asthma
  • Gastrointestinal problems such as reflux
  • Endocrine problems such as hyperthyroidism
  • Arthritis
  • Nasal/sinus allergies
  • Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease
  • Low back pain
  • Chronic pain

Insomnia & Depression

Many times insomnia is caused by psychiatric conditions such as depression. Psychological struggles can make it hard to sleep. Sleeplessness itself can bring on mood changes, and shifts in hormones and physiology can lead to both psychiatric issues and insomnia at the same time.

Sleep problems may represent a symptom of depression, and the risk of severe insomnia is much higher in patients with major depressive disorders. Studies show that insomnia can also trigger or worsen depression.

The symptoms of depression, such as low energy, loss of interest or motivation, feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and insomnia can be linked, and one can affect the other by making it worse. But regardless of which came first, the good part is that both are treatable .

Insomnia & Food

Certain food items, including eating patterns, can contribute to insomnia. If you are suffering from insomnia, check the following:

Alcohol is a sedative. It can make you fall asleep initially, but may disrupt your sleep later in the night.

Caffeine is a stimulant. Most people feel that consuming caffeine in the morning will help them start the day and feel productive. Caffeine in moderation is fine, but excess of it can cause insomnia.
