Last few days I am having sleep problems (due to earthquake phobia - as I am from Siliguri). Also I feel dizzy at times. I took b.p. reading at 11 today in school and it was 160/100 (taken ESLO 5 mg in morning). Again at 12 PM reading was 140/100. Came back home at 2 PM took another ESLO 5 mg to combat the b.p. Now it is 135/80. Head dizziness is slightly there. Please help and answer my following question:
  1. Shall I take more readings for next few days?
  2. If I consult a local doctor what should I ask for?
  3. Should I consider changing my medicines?

Your diagnosis is Hypertension

First let me explain what is hypertension and some of its causes. Hypertension is defined as having a blood pressure higher than 140 over 90 mmHg. Blood pressure is the pressure applied by blood on the walls of the blood vessels. American Heart Association (AHA) defined the following ranges (in mmHg):
  1. Normal blood pressure - 120/80
  2. Prehypertension - 120-139/80-89
  3. Stage 1 hypertension - 140-159/90-99
  4. Stage 2 hypertension - 160+/100+
  5. Medical emergency - 180+/110+
Some general causes of hypertension are:
  • Anxiety
  • Physical inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Alcohol and tobacco abuse
  • A salt-rich diet associated with processed and fatty foods
  • Low dietary potassium
A major issue is anxiety for you and hence your BP also shoots up. This can be relieved by:
  1. Counseling sessions with a Psychologist to calm your mind and soothe your body
  2. Listen to soft music to put your body at ease
  3. Avoid rushing always and take time to spend with yourself at least for 10 minutes daily
  4. Start exercise for 45 minutes daily and go for jog. This helps your blood vessels stretch and relax
These will also help with your hypertension. Consult again after 1 month to follow up. Practice yoga & meditation for anxiety. For further queries and other inputs such as diet charts, consult online at JustDoc.
