Test Description▼▲
The Glycosylated Haemoglobin or HbA1c blood test gives a picture of the average amount of glucose in your blood over the past 2 to 3 months. Therefore, it monitors blood glucose levels in your blood if you are a diagnosed diabetic so that the risk of complications related to it can be assessed and prevented. It can also be used to diagnose diabetes and to assess whether you are at increased risk of developing the disease or not.
When To
Get Tested▼▲
- If you are already diagnosed with diabetes to see the risk for complications affecting kidney, eyes, brain and cardiovascular system.
- If you have symptoms of diabetes like increased thirst, increased urination, fatigue.
- If you have additional risk factors for diabetes like high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, obesity or family history of diabetes.
- As a part of a routine health check-up.

Test Result & Interpretation▼▲
- If the Glycosylated Haemoglobin or HbA1c levels show up within the test range, usually 5.7%, that means you are a non-diabetic.
- If the Glycosylated Haemoglobin or HbA1c levels are between 5.7-6.5% it could mean an increased risk of developing diabetes, a condition called Pre-diabetes.
- If the Glycosylated Haemoglobin or HbA1c levels come more than 6.5%, it indicates diabetes, with either a new-onset or if you already are diabetic, it shows the level of control or effects your medicines have.
- The target Glycosylated Haemoglobin or HbA1c levels for diabetes control are 6.5% or lesser. Any value above that is poor control.
Expert Advice▼▲
- Glycosylated Haemoglobin or HbA1c is a marker of Diabetes since it shows long-term glucose control.
- When in the pre-diabetic range, it is a sign that you could, later on, develop diabetes and must regularly control your sugars.
- When the levels are more in the Diabetic range, it indicates, you must start treatment for Diabetes and consult a Physician for the same.
- The patients already diagnosed with Diabetes are often monitored with these levels to check the efficacy of the medication on them and if not well, then a change is recommended in medications itself or at least of their dosages.
Common Questions▼▲
Is there a home test for Glycosylated Haemoglobin or HbA1c?
Yes. If you have already been diagnosed with diabetes, a home test may be used to help monitor your glucose control over time.
Why are my Glycosylated Haemoglobin and blood glucose different?
Glycosylated Haemoglobin represents an average glucose over time while your blood glucose reflects the changes in your blood sugar at the moment. Each blood glucose is like a snapshot and each is different. The Glycosylated Haemoglobin is an indication that in general your glucose has been elevated over the last few months or in general it has been normal. It is inherently not as sensitive as a blood glucose. However, if your day-to-day glucose control is stable (good or bad), then both the Glycosylated Haemoglobin and blood glucose should reflect this.
