Test Description

The Albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) is used screen people who have high risk of developing any kind of kidney disease. Mostly people with chronic conditions such as hypertension (High BP) or diabetes are at increased risk of developing any kind of kidney disease. People with Type 2 diabetes should take the test every year whereas people with Type 1 diabetes should get tested annually, 5 years after diagnosis. It is basically the ratio of proteins excreted after filtration through your kidney, that marks the efficiency of the kidney function.

When To Get Tested

  • People with Type 1 diabetes should get it tested annually, 5 years after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.
  • People with Type 2 disease should get it tested annually, immediately after diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
  • If albumin in urine is detected, it should be confirmed by retesting it within 3 months.
  • People with hypertension should consult their medical doctor to determine the frequency of test.

Test Result & Interpretation

  • An Albumin Creatinine Ratio or ACR is a test that doctors use to determine the function of your kidneys. Normal kidney function shows results within the normal range.
  • When it is high, it reveals kidney injury or damage that may be chronic.
  • It is also used to monitor the function of the kidney in chronically ill Renal failure patients who need continuous monitoring or dialysis patients to check improvement.

Expert Advice

  • Should your test results indicate high levels of Urine ACR, it is a must to get the other parameters and the blood levels also checked and seen by a doctor so that the grade of renal injury can be diagnosed and treatment started based on that.
  • Normal levels often indicate normal kidney function and need no further testing.

Common Questions

Are there other reasons for having increased urine albumin levels?
Increase urine albumin level does not detect diabetes. It may be related to other issue like hypertension or lipid abnormalities. Elevated level may be the result of dehydration, UTI or some drugs.

My Urine Albumin level are elevated. What further test should I take to detect any kidney disease?
A serum or blood Creatinine is a test often done along with Urine ACR to check if the kidney disease is progressive. Other tests that may also be done are Urine Routine (Urinalysis), Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), or Urine Protein. The presence of protein or blood in the urine indicated renal injury that maybe acute or chronic.
