Test Description

FBS Test (Fasting Blood Glucose) is a test that measures the body’s inherent capacity to clear glucose. FBS test is used to screen people who are at risk of developing diabetes. Fasting for 8 hours minimum is required before the blood for testing is taken. Once should get FBS (Fasting Glucose) test done if she is pregnant or is above 45yrs of age. This test is more accurate than RBS (random blood sugar) test because there is no chance that the level of glucose in blood has been influenced by recent food intake.

When To Get Tested

  • FBS test is done when the blood sugar needs to be tested, as part of routine health checks or during pregnancy.
  • If someone has symptoms of high blood glucose such as Fatigue, Increased thirst, blurring of vision.
  • If someone has symptoms of low blood glucose such as Anxiety, hunger, blurred vision, sweating, confusion.
  • If someone has medical conditions such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, obesity, high cholesterol level.
  • As part of a routine health check-up, FBS test is recommended every once a year after the age of 40 and once every 2 years from ages 28-40.

Test Result & Interpretation

  • An FBS test result that shows a high blood glucose is indicative of diabetes or Pre-diabetes.
  • An FBS test result of 100-120 indicates that you may be at risk to get Diabetes later on in life.
  • Or an FBS test result of 120 and above means that your body probably is already affected by Diabetes.

Expert Advice

  • FBS test results in itself cannot completely diagnose diabetes, although they do help in monitoring when pre-diabetes has set in.
  • Other tests like HbA1c must be done in conjunction with FBS test to check the long-term glycemic index or if Diabetic, then glucose control is checked periodically.
  • RSB test (Random Blood sugar) is also done when fasting is not possible or other tests are inconclusive.
  • It is best to let a doctor evaluate the FBS test results especially when they fall under the dubious ranges. But if all these tests show an elevated glucose, you may need to start treatment for Diabetes as soon as possible.

Common Questions

Can I test myself at home for blood glucose?
There is no reason to test blood glucose at home if you are a non-diabetic. Your health practitioner generally recommends FBS test as part of your general health checkup.
If you are diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor will recommend you to use blood glucose monitoring device (glucometer) to monitor your level regularly.

I am not diabetic. What can be the other reasons for high or low blood glucose level?
Increased blood glucose in an FBS test can be due to chronic kidney disease, stress, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, hyperthyroidism, drugs like steroids, anti-depressants etc.
Decreased blood glucose in an FBS test can be due to starvation, hypothyroidism, liver disease.

Can I test my urine glucose instead of blood glucose?
Glucose in urine can be detected only if there is high glucose level in the body where the extra glucose is passed through urine. The other reason to find glucose in urine is kidney damage where the glucose is leaked into the urine.
