Test Description

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. The bacteria is located in the mouth or genital areas, where it causes an infection that is transmitted via sexual intercourse. The VDRL test detects antibodies produced by the infected individual against the bacterial antigens. It is usually a preliminary test for syphilis that is confirmed by the treponemal test. Syphilis can be prevented by practising safe sex.

When To Get Tested

To screen for syphilis if an individual
  • Displays signs of syphilis
  • Suffers from HIV
  • Suffers from any other STD

Common Questions

What are the symptoms of syphilis?
A small painless sore near the mouth or genital region, swelling in the lymph nodes located near the sore and a rash that does not itch are the initial signs of syphilis.

Can the result of VDRL be wrong?
A false negative result can occur if the test is done within the first three months of contracting the infection, as the body has not yet developed antibodies against the bacterial antigens. A test done in the last stages of the disease also shows negative results, as the body’s immune system is overwhelmed by the bacteria.
A false positive result can occur due to presence of other infections such as Lyme disease, tuberculosis, HIV, malaria and pneumonia, amongst others.
