Test Description

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the leading cause of deaths worldwide. It is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which attacks the CD4+ immune cells. It hijacks the body’s immune system, leading to multiple secondary infections that ultimately cause death. The HIV test checks for an antigen on the surface of the virus called p24 antigen and for p24 antibodies that are developed by an infected person. In the initial few weeks of infection, the levels of p24 antigen are high. 2-8 weeks after infection, the body develops p24 antibodies that can be detected. As the initial infection subsides, levels of p24 antigen and antibody fall. However, the body is unable to overcome the virus, which multiplies rapidly in the immune cells. The resulting diminished immunity leaves the person vulnerable to various infections such as tuberculosis and Kaposi’s sarcoma.

When To Get Tested

Routine screening for HIV is recommended by WHO for the following individuals:
  • Aged 13-64 years
  • Women who are pregnant or are planning for a child

Annual screening is recommended for high-risk individuals, who:
  • Have had unprotected sexual intercourse since their last HIV test
  • Has an HIV-positive partner
  • Has shared needles for injection of drugs or for tattoos
  • Has a partner who falls into the above categories

Common Questions

What are the symptoms of HIV infection?
Initial symptoms may include influenza or other viral infections, which subside. Infected individuals can remain asymptomatic for years. Once the HIV has taken over the immune system, the individuals experience secondary infections, the most common being tuberculosis and Kaposi’s sarcoma. The symptoms of these diseases start to appear. Hence, there are no specific symptoms of an HIV infection.

What is the treatment for HIV AIDS?
Unfortunately, there is no complete cure for AIDS. Patients can live until 10 years after being diagnosed. The Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) is administered to patients, which decreases viral replication. Together with intensive care, this can increase the lifespan of infected individuals.

Is the HIV test result confidential?
HIV test results are confidential and remain between the doctor and patient. However, it is recommended that HIV positive individuals share details of their condition with their partners and before donating blood or sharing needles.
