Test Description

Immunoglobins are proteins produced by the immune cells that recognise and act against foreign antigens. There are five immunoglobin classes – IgA, IgG, IgM, IgE and IgD. The immunoglobin panel tests for three of the main immunoglobins – IgA, IgG and IgM. It is a quantitative test that determines the levels of the three immunoglobins, in order to check if there is either an immunoglobin excess (leading to an autoimmune condition) or an immunoglobin deficiency (causing susceptibility to infections).

When To Get Tested

To detect and monitor suspected cases of either immunoglobin deficiency or excess

Common Questions

What are the functions of the various classes of immunoglobins?
IgM is the first immunoglobin to be produced in response to an infection and hence provides short-term immunity. Long term immunity is provided by IgG, which can pass through the placenta to the foetus. IgA provides immunity in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. IgE plays a role in allergies. The function of IgD is not understood yet.

What are the types of immunoglobin disorders?
Immunoglobin deficiency occurs when there is an abnormal decrease in the number of immunoglobins in the body. This can either be acquired or inherited. Immunoglobin excess occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the number of immunoglobins. This can be polyclonal, wherein the immunoglobins are produced from multiple immune cells, or monoclonal, where the immunoglobins are produced from clones of one immune cell.
