Test Description

Hepatitis C test is a test ordered to screen, diagnose or monitor treatment of hepatitis C viral infection (HCV), these tests include HCV antibody which detects the presence of antibodies to the virus, and HCV RNA test, which detects viral RNA in the blood.

HCV antibody test can be performed as part of acute viral hepatitis panel, to determine the specific hepatitis virus affecting a person, the HCV RNA tests can be quantitative, this measures
the HCV viral load, or qualitative this shows if there is any HCV RNA present, and it helps indicate a current on past infection. Hepatitis C viral genotyping also helps determine the genotype of the HCV affecting an individual and also guides treatment.

When To Get Tested

  • As part of a screening test, if you are at risk of contracting HCV infection, such high-risk persons includes if you are injecting illegal drugs, receiving blood transfusion or organ transplant, undergoing dialysis, have been exposed to someone with hepatitis C, health care workers, if you have evidence of chronic liver disease, if you have HIV, if a child is born to a hepatitis C positive mother.
  • If you have abnormal liver panel results, hepatitis C viral antibody test can be done
  • If your antibody test is positive, HCV RNA test may be ordered as follow-up test
  • If you have been diagnosed with HCV infection, HCV genotyping can be done before the commencement of treatment.
  • If you are undergoing treatment, HCV viral load may be ordered to monitor and evaluate effectiveness of treatment

Test Result & Interpretation

  • If your HCV antibody is negative it indicates no infections or the test has been carried out too early following an exposure, so a later test would be required
  • If HCV antibody is positive or indeterminate with a negative HCV RNA it indicates past infection or no infection, additional tests can be done.
  • If your HCV antibody is positive or weak or indeterminate with a positive HCV RNA it indicates a current infection.
  • If the serial load is increasing it indicates an unsuccessful treatment, however of HCV RNA load is decreasing or undetectable, it indicates effective treatment
  • HCV genotype identifies the specific strain, a person has, this helps the health care provider in choosing the type of treatment.

Common Questions

Is there a vaccination against HCV?
Currently, there is no available vaccine for HCV.

Can I get re-infected with HCV after I have recovered from it?
Yes, infection with HCV does not offer life immunity, because the virus undergoes
changes and replication during an infection.

Is there a home test that I can use to test for the virus at home?
There are approved kits available, but it is advised to carry out your tests in a laboratory or hospital.

If I have mild symptoms why should I be tested?
Infection with HCV often leads to chronic hepatitis and this can further lead to complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer, so early detection helps your health care provider monitor you closely and treat if the need arises.
