Test Description

Urine culture test is used to diagnose urinary tract infection and the bacteria and yeast causing the infection. The doctor may prescribe urine culture along with susceptibility testing to determine which drugs/antibiotics will be most effective in treating your infection.
Most UTIs are easily treated unless the infection spreads to kidney or bloodstream. If untreated, it may be life-threatening.

When To Get Tested

  • Your doctor may get you tested when you have symptoms such as burning sensation during urination, strong smelling urine, desire to urinate frequently, lower back pain.
  • As part of routine checkup during pregnancy to screen for bacteria during urination.
  • As a follow-up test for abnormal results of urinalysis.

Test Result & Interpretation

Urine Culture test, sensitivity or susceptibility is always done to check for bacterial infections and what antibiotics they are responsive to. This helps in the treatment of the urinary infection and better management of your problem. The test is designed to be specific so that multiple antibiotics that can treat your condition are tested against the bacteria and displayed on the reports that can be prescribed to you.

Expert Advice

If you are positive for a urinary tract infection, this report will show the antibiotics that must be taken for a cure of the problem. The dosage can be prescribed by your doctor or a Physician for the treatment of the same. It is important to start taking these antibiotics because the bacteria will be responsive to these best, rather than others that may not show susceptible or are not tested for the bacterium involved. You should also start drinking a lot of water to cure this infection and hydration is the key to early cure here.

Common Questions

What time of the day should the urine sample be collected for urine culture testing?
It is preferred to get the first-morning void as it is more concentrated, but the time of collection is generally not important unless it is specifically mentioned by your healthcare provider.

How should I collect urine sample?
A midstream clean catch urine sample should be collected. Women should thoroughly clean the perineal area, men should wipe the tip of the penis, start to urinate, let some urine fall into the toilet and then collect urine in the container provided.

What happens if urinary tract infection goes untreated?
If left untreated the infection may move from lower urinary tract to upper urinary tract which may infect the kidney. Sometime the infection may enter the bloodstream causing septicemia.
