Test Description

A Thyroid test is used to screen patient or help diagnose thyroid disorder. The panel includes three tests T3, T4, TSH. One should get tested if he or she has symptoms of hyperthyroidism such as weight gain, hair loss, fatigue or menstrual irregularity in women or symptoms of hypothyroidism such as weight loss, difficulty sleeping, weakness, diarrhoea, etc.

When To Get Tested

  • If you have symptoms of hyperthyroidism such as weight gain, constipation, cold intolerance, dry skin, fatigue, hair loss, or irregular mensural cycle in women.
  • If you have symptoms of hypothyroidism such as weight loss, diarrhoea, difficulty sleeping, weakness, tremors in hands, swelling of eyes.
  • As part of a routine check if you are pregnant.

Test Result & Interpretation

  • Thyroid Test when abnormal indicates disorders of the Thyroid gland.
  • A higher range of TSH in a Thyroid Test indicates Hypothyroidism, while lower range indicates Hyperthyroidism.
  • T3 and T4 are indicators of the thyroid function and if increased or decreased, mean a compensated result, affecting TSH.

Expert Advice

  • A Thyroid test is a test that indicates thyroid disease.
  • A high TSH indicates Hypothyroidism and requires medications when beyond 5.5-6, depending on clinical assessment.
  • A low TSH indicates Hyperthyroidism and may require treatment when levels fall below 1-2.
  • When the thyroid hormones T3 & T4 are also within abnormal range, it indicates a compensated TSH and hence will require monitoring.
  • A physician will usually recommend lifestyle changes as well as medication for effective treatment if the results are not within limits prescribed.

Common Questions

What are the other medical conditions that can affect my TSH level?
Apart from hyper and hypothyroidism, TSH level may be affected due to liver dysfunction, pregnancy, extreme stress, oestrogen and drugs like aspirin, steroids etc.

What can I do to raise or lower T4 level?

Other tests which your doctor may prescribe in addition to thyroid panel are thyroid antibodies, calcitonin, thyroglobulin and TBG
