Test Description

PPBS test (Postprandial Blood Sugar/Postprandial glucose - PPG) measures the amount of glucose present in the blood after a meal. Ten minutes after a meal is eaten, blood glucose levels will increase, as the carbohydrates that have been consumed are broken down into glucose. However, the action of insulin decreases the blood glucose levels, as it promotes the body’s cells to take up glucose from the blood. The blood glucose levels fall back to their preprandial level within two hours of the meal. In diabetics, this does not happen, due to either absence of insulin or insulin resistance, leading to abnormally high blood glucose levels. The PPBS test is usually done two hours after a meal.

When To Get Tested

To test for:
  • Postprandial hyperglycaemia
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Diabetes
  • Pre-diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes

Common Questions

What factors can affect PPBS test results?
PPG test results can be affected if the individual has consumed Vitamin C or is a woman undergoing her menstrual cycle. Hence, this should be avoided while going for a PPG test to get accurate results.

Why is PPBS test usually done along with FPG and HbA1c?
Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) indicates the blood glucose levels in the fasting conditions while Postprandial Plasma Glucose (PPG) is indicative of blood glucose levels after a meal. Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a measure of the average blood glucose levels of the past 2-3 months, giving an indication of fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels over a long run.

What are the consequences of having high levels in a PPBS test?
A long period of high postprandial blood glucose can lead to complications associated with diabetes.  Retinopathy has been associated with hyperglycaemia. Controlling PPG has been seen to decrease the risk of diabetic complications.
