Test Description

The HSG test (Hysterosalpingogram) is done to find out if a woman’s infertility is due to a structural reason, such as a blockage in the fallopian tubes, abnormal shape of the uterus or presence of polyps. During the HSG test, a dye is injected into the uterine cavity through the vagina and cervix. It fills the uterine cavity, thus enabling the doctor to view its shape and structure through a x-ray scan. The dye further enters the fallopian tubes if they are open, and then enters the abdominal cavity. The dye cannot enter blocked fallopian tubes.

The test feels like menstrual cramps while during the test pain varies from person to person.

When To Get Tested

To check for blocked fallopian tubes or abnormalities in the uterus, to diagnose the cause of suspected infertility. Abnormal shape of the uterus can also indicate injury like polyps, fibroids, adhesions.

Sometimes, birth control tubal implants might also block fallopian tubes.

Test Result & Interpretation

HSG test (Hysterosalpingogram) is an X-Ray test. It looks at the inside of the fallopian tubes & uterus. There can be two outcomes based on shape:-

The shape is normal - No objects, growths, tumours seen in the Uterus.

The shape is abnormal - Blocked Fallopian Tubes, abnormal uterus, holes in the wall of uterus, polyps or fibroids are present. In some cases, if fallopian tube has a spasm during the test, it might look like a blocked tube. Then the results need to be discarded.

Expert Advice

Once your HSG test reports are out, visit an infertility expert to understand more about the results. There are several tests like Luteinizing Hormone (LH) or FSH Test to be done before HSG to get indicative results. Please take advice from the infertility expert.

Common Questions

Does the HSG test increase chances of conceiving?
The HSG test is used to detect the cause of infertility and is not a treatment. However, chances of pregnancy may slightly increase after the HSG test since minor blockages in the fallopian tubes can be flushed out during this test.

What information needs to be disclosed before undergoing an HSG test?
Suspected or confirmed pregnancy, allergy to iodine or any other medicine, history of diabetes or kidney disorders or pelvic infections, current medications especially blood thinners must be disclosed to the doctor before undergoing the HSG test.

What should I know about the HSG test?
Some of the dye might leak out of the vagina, and you might see heavy vaginal bleeding for a few days. You must call your doctor if you have heavy vaginal bleeding, severe belly pain or fever.
